Whale
Watching:
Whale watching trips resume mid-April
in Provincetown, the whale watching capital
of the eastern seaboard. This is the time of year when the humpbacks
and finbacks return from their mating season in the West Indies. Leaving
from MacMillan Wharf, boats travel to Stellwagen Bank National Marine
Sanctuary in Cape Cod Bay, a fertile underwater feeding ground for whales
just eight miles from Provincetown Harbor. Whales are attracted to the
boats and often swim around and under them, sometimes for hours. Dramatic
breachings, when whales hurl themselves straight up and out of the water,
are a common sight. Most cruises last three-and-a-half hours and have
naturalists on board as "tour guides."
